Features

Set like a jewel on a cloistered corner at the Berkeley/Oakland border, this exquisite Mediterranean residence was featured on the 2019 Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association Spring House Tour. Designed by the architectural partnership of Morrow and Garren, it was built in 1922 for William and Ethel Powell. BAHA editor Daniella Thompson writes that the Powell House "presents a romantic vision based on fantasy Hispanic themes," from "the scrolled roof parapet and the charming French doors opening onto a dainty curved balcony overhanging the portico" to the art tiles, mosaic stone patios, graceful ironwork and three musical fountains that enhance its lush landscape. Extensively renovated and lovingly maintained, the Powell House offers refined modern living, easy indoor/outdoor flow, and enchanting architecture in convenient, coveted Claremont Court.

Neighborhood

CLAREMONT COURT

In 1905 the transformation from grand Victorian estates and farms to the residential Claremont Court neighborhood was created from the country estates of Judge Garber and James Palache. The nearby Claremont Hotel broke ground the following year. The wide and beautiful Claremont Boulevard defined the Court as it ran from the magnificent brick columns towards the University of California. In 1916 an additional part of the Garber estate became today’s Tanglewood Road. Curving Tanglewood Road follows the contours of the Garbers’ driveway that led off Claremont Avenue. People have been long enticed to live in this elegant community of architecturally designed homes and beautifully landscaped gardens.
